Michigan Game Fish Stocking
Looking for Michigan Game Fish Stocking Services?
Are you interested in stocking your pond? Looking for Michigan game fish stocking services or information? At Harrietta Hills Trout Farm, we believe that investing in Michigan game fish stocking is a great way to increase your enjoyment of your pond. It helps you to support natural habitats and species, attract birds, build a waterfall, and catch your dinner (or at least work up an appetite trying). However, before you start the Michigan game fish stocking process, and release those trout, bass, perch, catfish, or sunfish into your pond, make sure you are doing it safely and legally.
When purchasing fish for stocking, it is your responsibility to determine whether or not you need a permit. If you do need a permit, then you must apply for that permit before beginning the stocking process. For example, let’s consider Michigan. (Harrietta Hills is only able to sell live fish to Michigan customers.) For Michigan game fish stocking, you do not need a permit if there are no permanent inlets or outlets and no public access. So, for example, if you built your pond, and it is self-contained on your property with no permanent inlets or outlets, you do not need a permit. On the other hand, if your pond feeds into a year-round stream or has public access, then you do need a permit. The latter is considered “public water” and the Department of Natural Resources is charged with protecting it. They require this additional step to ensure that the fish released are healthy and do not pose management problems, or unbalance the local ecosystem. The good news is, we can help you through the process even if you do need a permit. While this extra step can sound intimidating, it really doesn’t have to be and the permit is free.
If you are not sure whether your pond qualifies as private or public, your Fisheries Management Unit can help (you can find an office near you on the permit application). If it is public, fill out the application. You’ll need to provide information such as the species and number of fish, number of inlets/outlets, purpose of stocking, source of the fish, etc. The application will guide you through all the necessary steps. If you don’t know how many fish your pond will support, or how many to put on your permit, the team of experts at Harrietta Hills can help with that too! Even if you must jump through a hoop to stock your pond, it’s well worth the peace of mind knowing that you bought healthy fish and are not accidentally stocking any illegal or invasive species.
