Is Windmill Pond Aeration Right for You?

There are so many things that make your pond unique, which means that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to pond aeration. That being said, Windmill Pond Aeration is an extremely versatile (and effective) method of aeration that could be the perfect fit for your pond.

What are the Benefits of Windmill Pond Aeration?

One of the biggest things that drives folks towards windmill pond aeration is that it is electricity free! Not everyone has electricity all the way out to their ponds, so having an aeration system that doesn’t need to be plugged in can be a necessity. No electricity also means a lower operating cost and windmills need very little maintenance, so although the initial cost of the unit may be a little higher than other aeration units, it will end up saving you money in the long run.

  • Windmill pond aeration is also a very environmentally friendly option. The only resource used is wind, which is renewable energy.
  • Windmills work year-round. During the winter they can also be used as a deicer. The steady stream of air into your pond can keep it from freezing over completely, preventing winter fish kills.
  • Windmills also get bonus points for their looks. Windmills can give your pond a very interesting focal point.

What are the Drawbacks of Windmill Pond Aeration?

Perhaps the most obvious drawback to windmill pond aeration is simply that the windmill needs to be in an area where there is adequate wind. If the area around your pond is too sheltered, this could be an issue. That being said, it is important to remember that windmills are tall, so just because there isn’t a ton of airflow six feet off the ground doesn’t necessarily mean that there isn’t plenty to power a windmill that is sixteen or even twenty-four feet off the ground. Windmills can also be located in a windy location away from the pond with a buried airline carrying air up to ¼ mile to the pond.
