Trout Stocking

So you’ve finally found a quiet spot to fish, but they aren’t biting. Thinking about trout stocking?

Crowds may be the reason you’ve chosen to live on property with your own private, or semi-private pond or riverbed. Having access to this relaxing pastime, without worrying about being disturbed by other recreational boats and paddle sports, is something many anglers in Michigan have sought out. After all, we have a great number of lakes and rivers to choose from. It’s no wonder people vacation from far and wide for their chance at a big catch here!

So now you’ve finally got all the opportunity and no fish.

You’ve come to the right place!

At Harrietta Hills, trout stocking is our specialty. We pride ourselves on the quality and health of our fish. Not only do we have live trout for sale, but we’re also Michigan’s premier pond and water management company. Many Michigan fish farms will happily sell you on their local trout stocking, but not many have the expertise to help you make your pond the vibrant, thriving habitat that will promote plentiful angling for years to come.

Trout stocking is just as much an art as it is a science. There’s a fine balance that must be maintained within your pond for these beautiful tasty fish to grow to maturity and spawn the next generation.

For one, water must be clean, clear and have adequate levels of oxygen. The proper mix of aquatic plants and an aeration system will help support the quality of the water in your pond and ensure that your trout stocking will be successful.

Secondly, trout feed on meals that either live in the water or drop onto the surface from surrounding trees and plants. This includes insects like ants, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets and flies, small fish, crayfish, fresh water shrimp and other crustaceans. Many anglers choose to supplement the trout’s diet with floating fish food, specially formulated for the nutritional needs of trout. Visit our shop to review the very best food and fish feeder options to support your growth objectives.

In addition to being food for them to eat, a healthy pond encourages a trout’s natural life cycle. Once they reach sexual maturity, trout look for clean gravel for laying their eggs. Managing against the overgrowth of muck at the bottom of your pond is just one way to help make sure that the trout have access to a clean, attractive place to restart the life cycle.

After their first 2-4 weeks of life, newly hatched trout begin to emerge from the safety of the gravel and move towards the light, seeking out tiny insects in the water. Due to their vulnerability at this stage, mortality rates are high. There must be places for them to hide from predators. Habitats such as decaying logs or sturdy aquatic plants can provide cover from fish-eating birds and turtles. We carry premium habitat structures that attract fish because they provide excellent protection, and specially designed not to snag your equipment while you are fishing for the more mature generation.

Great to fish, even better to taste!

Trout are one of the most sought-after fish for eating and with good reason. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they have tender flesh and a mild, somewhat nutty flavor. They have high levels of astaxanthin which is a powerful antioxidant. Fatty fish such as lake trout, salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and tuna contain the most omega-3 fatty acids of all the fish, and you may have noticed that besides the trout, all the others on this list are saltwater fish. Why is this noteworthy? Because omega-3 fatty acids that are known to decrease triglycerides, lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, decrease stroke and heart failure risk and reduce irregular heartbeats. Eating at least 1-2 servings a week of fish, especially a serving of freshwater trout with these superfood omega-3s, has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, particularly sudden cardiac arrest.

Trout can help to support the entire ecosystem of the pond and surrounding area. Remember, with a pond healthy enough for trout, you can be sure that other wildlife will thrive too. For any questions about whether trout stocking is a good choice for your pond, call us at 877-389-2514.
