Kasco De-Icers Save Fish and Property!
Each Year Thousands of Ponds are Protected by Kasco, World-Leader in De-Icing
Pond owners spend thousands of dollars every year stocking, maintaining, and caring for their pond and fish. It's important to protect this investment from oxygen die off in winter.
Winter kill can happen any year. It is most common when there is thick ice cover on the pond and/or lots of snow on top of the ice. As winter progresses, the oxygen is used up and the biggest fish always die first.
This can be avoided by using a Kasco De-Icer to maintain an area of open water. This open water area only needs to be 1% of the total surface area to allow oxygen to enter the water and prevent fish die off.
Waterfowl and other wildlife can also have access to open water during the winter months.
Sizing Your De-Icer Correctly Will Assure Optimum Performance
De-Icing is not an exact science, but more of an art form. As you might expect, geographic location and local temperatures play a major role in De-Icer sizing. However, some commonly overlooked variables, such as depth of water, prevailing wind and water currents, underwater structure, and bottom contour can affect the sizing requirements of a De-Icer. When choosing De-Icers think about all of these factors.
Here are a few things to remember:
• De-Icers work by moving warm bottom water to the surface. The deeper the surrounding water, the more warm water there is to move.
• Structure, such as pilings, floats, and bottom contour can limit the reach of the flow and cause less open water. The more restrictions on flow, the more De-Icers will be needed.
• Wind and water currents can help or hinder the effectiveness of a De-Icer. Always use the currents to your advantage. Do not fight them.
• Do not splash the water, this will cool it faster. Install the unit to create a boiling action at the surface.
